Santa Maria de Fenals d’Aro (municipality of Castell-Platja d’Aro), in 968 it belonged to the monastery of Sant Feliu de Guixols and parish at least to 1064. The small temple of the s. XI, is in the current Fenals Vell. In 1478 a new parochial church began to be built, which in 1484 continued despite the opposition of some parishioners. It was joined to Castell d’Aro when this parish was created in 1602. The church was enlarged in the 18th century, the street door is from 1774 and the sacristy of 1764. As a parish became independent in 1834.
In the twentieth century the parish was transferred to the new church of Santa Maria de Platja d’Aro, the work of the architect Josep Esteve i Corredor. He built it in an area of 3,956.50 m2, donated by Pere Bas i Sàbat, with a beautiful landscaped porch . The first stone was put in August of 1953. The work was finished in 1955 and was blessed on August 30, 1959, being the chaplain Ramon Lloansí i Marill, who was dedicated to the church on April 19, 1964. The bell tower was finished by Pere Vila i Bosch, who also built the rectory.
The image of the Virgin is by Antón Delgado, donated by Pepita Artigas and Pol, the tabernacle is from the Casa Corberó, the processonal cross is from Carmaniu and the metal cover of the baptismal font (1962) given by Pere Bas i Sàbat, the ambit is the work of Carmenatti and the chandeliers. The credentials of wrought iron, of the Las Cadenas locksmith shop in Girona.
We celebrate the Festival of the parish on August 15. The patron saint of the village of Fenals d’Aro is the Mother of God of the Sponsorship, whose celebration is celebrated the second Sunday in November. Within the parochial demarcation there is also the chapel of Ntra. Mrs. of S’Agaró’s Esperanza (1942), of particular property, the work of the architect Francesc Folguera, with two gothic tombs of Foixà and a portico of gothic arches from the disappeared convent of Sant Francesc de Girona.
